What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture, as a key component of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), involves the insertion of tiny needles into the skin to boost the wellbeing and relief the mental stress.

How does acupuncture work?

Based on the theory of TCM, most diseases are caused by the broken balance of ‘Yin Yang’ and ‘Qi-Blood’ (known as energy or life force) in our body.  Acupuncture helps to gain the flow of ‘Qi-Blood’ and the harmony of the ‘Yin-Yang’ in the body through inserting needles and stimulating the relevant points according to the meridian or pathway.

Who can benefit from acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been widely applied for a variety of disease and has low risk and high effectiveness. It helps with the internal systems (i.e. gastrointestinal disease), neurological diseases, cardiovascular diseases, gynecological issues( i.e. menstruation and infertility problems), external systems (i.e. like post-injury recovery), dermatological disease, and certain pediatric problems (i.e.cerebral palsy). Another well-known use of acupuncture is to relieve pain, facial rejuvenation, and losing weight.

What services do we offer?

Acupuncture is not just a single approach in TCM system. In TCM terminology, acupuncture always refers to acupuncture and moxibustion in Chinese, which means the two of them are closely related and supplemented. Moxibustion is a therapy that burns moxa upon the points and help to adjust the relationship of ‘Yin’ and ‘Yang’ in the body.  The following techniques can also be applied:

  • Auricular acupuncture
  •  Acupressure
  • Blood letting
  • Dermal needle
  • Stone needle
  • Needle pricking
  • Simple herbal therapy
  • Food therapy
  • Chinese medicine heated compress

Choosing the proper therapy depends on the initial assessment that takes into account the kind of disease, the individual need, and the status of the illness. This involves taking a thorough history, looking at your tongue (including the coating and the color of the tongue body), taking your pulse (the strength, the rhythm and the shape), and looking at your complexion. From this information the acupuncturist comes up with a Chinese medicine diagnosis and sets up a plan for you. The benefits and risks of each therapy chosen will be discussed as all the therapies will need your consent.
